Which came first, the chicken or the egg? While we may not know the answer to that question, we do know whether the seed or the plant came first, don't we!?? Why it must have been the seed, and an organic seed at that! In nature, it all begins with the seed. Organic gardening begins with the organic seed that you buy. Whether you are a home gardener, or a commercial grower, the definition of organic means that every aspect of the growing process is performed organically, starting with the use of organic seeds. Why use organic garden seeds? The use of chemicals can alter the genetic makeup of seeds. And, the chemicals can be carried in the seed. The resulting plant and vegetables or herbs can be affected. As home gardeners, we look to provide the healthiest food for ourselves and our family. That starts with organic seeds. The term "USDA Certified Organic" means the seeds or produce has gone through and complied with strict U.S. Department of Agriculture rules and regulations. FYI . Some retailers refer to their seeds or produce as "Organic". Don't' be fooled. If it doesn't carry the USDA Organic seal, it may not be as organic as you might think. Survival Seeds - Certified organic garden seeds are good candidates for non-GMO and survival seeds.
Make sure the vegetable or herb seeds you buy are truly organic. Look for the USDA Certified Organic logo (pictured above) on the front of the seed packet, or the produce label in the vegetable section of your local grocery store.
